About makko powder and incense making
HOW CAN WE MAKE INCENSE WITH MAKKO POWDER?
The amount of makko powder you use will vary depending on the ingredients in your blend.
When working with mainly herbal powders such as lavender or white sage, use about 25%-50% of makko powder in the total mixture. For wood-based powders like sandalwood or cedarwood, adjust the makko powder to about 25%-40%.
If your blend contains a higher amount of resins-such as frankincense or myrrh, consider increasing the makko powder. Resins tend to make incense more difficult to burn evenly, and a little extra makko powder will help create a smoother, more consistent burn.
WHEN YOUR INCENSE MAY NOT BURN PROPERLY.
When a recipe contains a higher amount of resin, such as frankincense or myrrh, the incense may be more difficult to burn evenly.
To improve the burn, try reducing the amount of resins and increasing the amount of makko powder, or add more wood powders such as sandalwood.
When making cone incense, avoid pressing the mixture too tightly into the mold or compacting it firmly by hand. Doing so can force out the air inside, reducing oxygen flow and preventing the incense from burning smoothly.
By shaping the tip of the incense cone to a point, it becomes easier to ignite and burns more steadily. This is also an important point.
Finally, ensure the incense is thoroughly dry before use. In humid climates, the drying process may take a little longer than usual.
This blend is inspired by the warmth and scent of a timeless sanctuary. You can enjoy pure incense made entirely without synthetic fragrances.
HOLY PLACE INCENSE
Makes about 45 cones
Sandalwood powder: 15g
Yoshida Incense makko powder: 15g
Palo Santo powder: 10g
Frankincense resin powder: 5g
1. Place all powders into a large zip-lock bag.
2. Seal the bag and gently shake to mix the ingredients evenly.
3. Using a spray bottle, gradually add a small amount of water to moisten the mixture.
4. Gather the mixture and knead it lightly until it holds together.
5. Shape the mixture into small cones.
Be careful not to press out all the air inside-this can make the incense difficult to burn evenly.
Tip: You may want to try using a toothpick to make a hole about two-thirds of the way through the cone from the center of the base toward the tip. Insert it gently so you don’t crack the cone. This help draw in oxygen and allow the incense burn more evenly.
6. Allow the cones to dry for 3 days to 1 week, depending on the season and humidity in your area.
Note: Drying time may vary depending on the climate and environment.
